Sydney Light Rail Cable Pits and Covers – Smart Poles
From Circular Quay through the heart of the CBD to Central Station before heading east to Surry Hills and out to Randwick via Moore Park, the Sydney Light Rail has transformed public transport in the harbour city. The 12km rail corridor linking the Prince of Wales Hospital and New South Wales University with the CBD is a low emission transport option for Sydneysiders.
The project not only consisted of the light rail itself, but also a number of streetscape upgrades including paving and even a section of George Street has been converted to a pedestrian only mall.
Mascot Engineering’s GRC Cable Pits where chosen for installation along the light rail tracks with most pits fitted with our unique Paver Infill Covers. Mascot Engineering Paver Infill Covers are manufactured from ductile iron ensuring strength and durability with no chance of edges warping or bending when the pit is accessed like some galvanised mild steel paver infill covers. Fitted with Australian Standard Lifting Keyholes in each corner, authorised access is permissible with standard lifting keys. The project also features our new gastight paver infill covers installed in the roadway and heavily at Central Station as well as infill covers encased in precast concrete that was tinted in dark grey to match the surrounding bitumen.
Smart Poles are increasingly popular in the CBD and regional areas with councils adopting the new technology. We’re currently working with a number of installers on supplying pits specifically for use with Smart Poles and developing products and covers to best suit these.
In addition to the cable jointing pits and covers, we supplied custom precast concrete bollards that were installed along the pedestrian section of George Street to protect pedestrians from vehicles. Mascot Engineering worked closely with a local wholesaler and the main contractors on this project and the team are extremely proud to have supplied this key transport infrastructure project.
All Mascot GRC Cable Pits are manufactured in Australia. They’re designed for the Australian construction industry and our harsh environment.
