Precast Solutions for a Landmark Marine Development
As part of the high-profile redevelopment of the New Sydney Fish Market, Mascot Engineering was engaged to design, engineer, manufacture and supply a range of custom precast concrete products for one of Sydneyâs most ambitious waterfront projects.
Located on the edge of Blackwattle Bay, the new Sydney Fish Market is set to become a world-class facility, transforming the area into a vibrant public and commercial precinct while continuing its long-standing role as a central hub for seafood trade.
Given the complexity of working in a marine environmentâwith limited site access and strict engineering requirementsâthe project demanded early coordination and innovative precast solutions.
Mascot Engineering â Design & Construct
As part of the design and construct delivery model, Mascot Engineeringâs technical team worked closely with all project stakeholdersâfrom the early design stage through engineering, manufacturing, and logistics.
This collaboration ensured that the products met all design intent, authority specifications, and construction constraints, particularly in the context of limited land access.
Products supplied included:
- 3 x Ausgrid Specification 11kV Cable Vaults
- Custom Precast Concrete Culverts to C2 Classification with 70mm steel cover, meeting stringent Sydney Water specifications
- Marine-grade precast elements to withstand the harsh harbour environment
- Headwalls, cable vaults, and custom concrete pits designed for long-term durability in a saltwater setting
One of the additional site complexities was that some of the precast elements manufactured by us would be partly submerged in tidal conditions once installed, requiring a thorough review of reinforcement materials and detailing to ensure they achieved the required design life in a marine environment.
Given the site constraints, all products were delivered to a holding yard in Rozelle, before being transported by barge across Blackwattle Bayâa logistical solution enabled by early planning and the off-site precast approach.
Built with Precast Precision
This project highlights the value of engaging Mascot Engineering early in the design phase. By involving our in-house operations and manufacturing team from the outset, the project was able to convert many elements that might otherwise have been cast in-situ into high-quality precast components. This approach offered:
- Improved site safety and reduced construction time
- Better quality control through off-site manufacturing
- Creative logistical solutions for difficult-access sites
With Mascot Engineeringâs precast concrete solutions, projects like the New Sydney Fish Market can progress with precision, durability, and long-term performance in mind. Our ability to deliver to marine-grade standards, meet authority specifications, and manage complex logistics demonstrates our capability to support major infrastructure and civic projects across Australia.
